There's a lot of great bars in Downtown to hang out and have a cocktail, maybe dance a bit if you're feeling it. But there's not much in the way of "Dance Spots" that aren't also a big production involving lines and covers (Exchange being the first one that comes to mind...).
Enter Honeycut, the latest from Cedd Moses and the 213 group.
Speakeasy vibe: check.
Pool table and cozy leather booths: check.
Disco flashing lights floor and pumping DJ music: check? Yes!!
The first step to experiencing Honeycut is finding it... If you head down 8th Street between Flower and Fig, look for the alleyway by the Roy's valet stand; you'll see the small sign announcing the bar's entrance. After making your way down the candle lit stairs, you'll find a door that opens into the low lit cozy bar area. Play a game of pool, or chat with some friends and enjoy some of the hand crafted cocktails. If you find the bartender Alex (also one of the owners), he'll make you a drink based on your mood and personality - mine was a bit sweet with a dash of spicy :)
But wait, what is that faint pulsing beat you hear? If it's after 10pm, sit back and watch - at some point, you'll see somebody disappear into what you realize is actually a door in the wall of the bar. Follow along, and you'll suddenly pass into a completely different landscape... Maybe best described as a re-enactment of a "Boogie Nights" scene, unfortunately minus the amazing moves and bellbottom attire. The pulsating lights dance floor makes it impossible to do anything but dance, so everyone does. There's a couple "VIP" booths off to the side, but no bottle service here - it's first come first serve. My group of friends snagged one, but then everyone wanted to dance in the middle of the light show vs the boring platform of the booth area anyway... Awesome! And if the all the dancing tires you out, or perhaps you want to chat with your cute new dance partner, back through the door you go :)
